Wacky XP Errors, Need Help

Well, my computer has been acting flacky.

I run spysweeper and bitdefender religiously and don't seem to have any viruses.

However, when I run "registry fix" programs, I get hundreds of errors found.

I attempted to reinstall Window XP Professional, but during the reinstall I kept getting messages stating that Windows could not find xxx.xxx, please insert Windows XP SP2 disk into drive. Well, the disk was in the drive but I could not get around this.

I had Windows continue the install without putting these files in. Their were maybe 30 of these missing files not installed. Needless to say, I still have many problems.

I also "lost" Internet Explorer. I could not find it anywhere and I ended up downloading the newest version online.

I do not know what to do. I do not want to blow-out my C drive as I have so many persoanl and business files, programs, logins and passwords that it would be a bear.

Any ideas?

Also, how do I unassociate a file extension? I have .jhtml associated with Firefox and this is not correct. I do not know what program to associate this file with. If necessary, how do I clear this association without choosing another program....

Please post your specs.
Are you doing a full repair/reinstall with the optical drive first in the boot order and booting from the cd (can't tell from your post)?

I ran the reinstall from within Windows, not on boot up........ please tell me this will fix this problem:)

You'll have to do a full repair/reinstall and for that follow the instructions in the link which will tell you how to go about booting from the optical drive with the XP cd.
You'll need to reinstall updates and drivers when you're done but your data as well as passwords, bookmarks, email, etc. should be untouched (but it's sound practice to back up anything really important.).

The question that should be in the back of your mind is "What bit my XP install?"
Make a list of observations for yourself; when this started, sudden or gradual, anything odd that might have been hardware related before it started, any new software installed; to help pin point what happened.

I think it may have started when I used profgrams to check for registry errors, months ago. I had the programs "fix" these errors.

I started having issues with outlook express where it would open, download e-mail, then close and I'd get the message asking if I wanted to send an error report to Microsoft. Over time, things have gotten funkier.

The only registry cleaner program we recommend generally is CCleaner : http://www.ccleaner.com/

If you're willing to go slow then RegCleaner, which requires you to go through the entries one at a time and learn what they are, is a good one since it will give you absolute control : http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

It also creates a back up file so you'll at least have a shot at repairing any damage you might do.
In fact it's a good idea to create a back up before doing anything with the registry.

make sure that you make a backup of all your important data that is on C: to another partition before going for reinstallation, otherwise once the data is gone you cannot recover it.
you will then need recovery softwares to recover them.

Just boot your computer and enter the BIOS setup ,change the boot sequence and make cd-rom as 1st boot and then save the settings before exiting.

insert the WinXP CD and start reinstallation.

If you successfully reinstall your winxp, go to www.ewido.net if you have internet connection and run a scan online.
