Using prorgam on laptop

I buy and sell toys and have a Collectors program on my desktop . The photos and data takes up a lot of hard drive space.
I would like to run the program on my laptop but with the program and all the data it would be to much for the laptops hard drive.
My question is can I install the program or data on a external hard drive and run it from my laptop or my desktop? Any ideas?

When you install applications, they generally make Many entries to the registry and copy all sorts of files to many different directories...

You could easily put the photos on an external and share the drive betwoeen the two machines.
