Socket A socket differences?

Never looked closely at some socket A boards that I was planning to do a build with. The boards I have have no surrounding bracket assembly. These boards were pulls and were said to be working. Thought this wouldn't be a problem as I still had some "dead" boards to get the assembly from but found that on those boards the assembly had integeral mounting incorporated into the socket. (Also noticed a difference in some 754 stuff that I have.) Do most sockets have these variances?

None of the Socket A boards I've worked with have a surrounding assembly - I assume by which you mean the heatsink 'cradle' that the newer AMD sockets have. They simply have three notches either side of the socket for the heatsink clips to attach to. The socket also has a 'stepped' area to allow you to attach the heatsink in the right orientation.

Yeah, Socket A never had any kind of bracket or cradle around the socket itself...the heatsink retention was done with a metal clip that attached to opposing sides of the socket and latched onto those protruding lugs on the side of the socket body.

Thanks guy's... having never worked with this socket before, I reaized that the issue is with the hsf. The one I was thinking was socket A, is for another socket system. Dug through my bone pile and found the right one. (Has been handy to aquire miscellaneous parts.) Well there's another 101 thing behind me... Thanks much!!!!
