I have an 80GB hard drive with two partitions, 16MB for XP and 64MB for data. Can anyone offer advice on whether this plan will work?

1) backup data partition to an external media
2) delete data in data partition
3) "delete" data partition
4) expand XP partition from 16 to 30
5) create new data partition for 50
6) restore data from external backup media

Thanks in advance.

You have to purchase a program like Partition Magic if you want to change the size AND keep the data on the drive. You wouldn't have to move any data around....You "would" want to backup any important data since its a serious chore to resize partitions.

Yeah, you'd have to do what EzyStvy says...you can't resize a partition with Disk Management without total data loss. You need a third party program like Partition Magic to do what you want to do.

But if I have already backed up my data and don't care about losing it, couldn't I delete the data partition? If there were then only one partition (XP) taking up 16MB of 80, couldn't I expand it without affecting anything already stored there?

You can't expand and existing partition without data lose using Disk Management. You have to use a third party partition manager for that.

Of course if you want to try expanding the partition with Disk Management go ahead, it's your computer. Just don't be surprised if Windows doesn't boot up after you try it.
