I know my motherboard can cope with a SATA II drive, as it's in there working at the moment. But it's set to limit data rate to 1.5Gb. How can I determine if the MB can cope wth 3.0Gb?

What is the make and model of your mobo?

Asus p5p 800
Sorry I thought it was in my signature, which seems not to have attached.

Heck, I don't sigs anyway as every time I've used them, the poster was talking about a different system  :)
But to answer you question, you'd go to the manufacturer's site and check their spec page:
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=166&l1=3&l2=11&l3=26&l4=0
And there it is Not listed as being a SATA 3/Gb mobo, so it's just regular SATA. However, since I don't build with Intel, I went to their site and looked at their chipset spec sheet:
http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/865pe/index.htm
Again, it lists only SATA and not SATA 3/Gb.
Note, though, that 3/Gb drives are normally backward compatible with "older" mobos; have a couple in this mobo and they work fine for example.

Much appreciated, thanks. I was wondering whether it said in the "Hardware profile", but now I know not to set the SATA II to 3Gb. And where to look for more info. Ta.
