I've got two different thumb drives (both 1 gig) that I can't get my computer to read. Computer is a HP 4650Y, about 4 months old, duel core E6600 with 2 gig ram, running win xp2. I can see the drives in device manager and when I select remove hardware but nothing when I open "my computer". Both thumb drives work fine on my other HP so I know there Ok. I've tried several different USB ports but no joy and I've restated my PC with no luck there. Thanks for any help or ideas.

There may be a conflict of drive letters, go into disk management by right clicking My Computer choose manage. In disk management and with one USB drive connected change the drive letter of the USB drive to say M you will get a warning message about changing drive letters but just carry on. Once done close down disk management and check in MY Computer.

Thanks for the reply Doug but no joy with that fix either. Disk Mgt said they drive was active and healthy but still couldn't see it in My Computer.

One other thing to try is remove all USB devices, turn off PC and remove plug from wall power socket. leave for thirty minutes and then turn back on, reconnect usb devices. Its a long shot but worth a try!

I'll give that a try and see what happens. I tried booting in safe mode, no joy, tried all my USB slots no joy. I did notice that when I plug my digital camera in, it doesn't show up in powerdesk either (I like powerdesk over explorer) but I can download pics from it using picture it. Anyway, I'll power down and set what happens, thanks for the advice.

Well it was worth the try Doug but no joy, no worries, I'll call HP tomorrow and use some warranty time up. I'll post the fix if they can fix it. Thanks for your help.

Problem solved, it was an autoplay problem and the fix is located at the link below:

It is a very quick download and quick fix also. I had to have my thumb drive loaded in the USB port to make the repair. Thanks again for the help.
