sound doesnt work on friends computer!

hi, my friends sound doesnt work and i thought id give it a go at fixiung it! but iv tried everthing i know but nothing works - like iv tried uninstalling the drivers updating the drivers cleaning dust out, etc...
its a dell optiplex gx270 with 1 gb of ram, and the sound card is: creative sb live! series (wdm)
and it is regognised in the operating sytem (xp) in things such as; device manager, and the playback volume control. does anyone know what might be wrong with it?

double check to make sure nothing is muted in windows and the volumes are turned up (I've made that mistake before).

If updating drivers didn't help then it is possible the sound card is just bad. You can find some pretty cheap basic sound cards on newegg for like $10, I would probably just give that a try.
