Media files crash PC

Whenever i use try to play a video file/dvd or a Game it crashes my sytem.

It's really annoying me, can anyone help.

We need your specs, if that's a home build, or the make and model if it's an OEM (Dell, etc.).
For now Go into Event Viewer : Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools and check for the errors that occurred when the computer crash.
If you find any post the full error message back here.

OK, so far you've told us that :
You've got a dual core Intel with 2 GB of memory.
You're running XP with SP2.
Event Viewer shows no errors.

Now we need to know :
Your motherboard?
Your video card is what make or is it on board ?
What resolution (800x600, 1024x768) and refresh rate (60 HZ, 85 HZ) is your monitor running at ( if it's an lcd what is the native resolution as well, even if it's not the one it's currently running at, you can ignore the refresh rate for an lcd. ).
Is the sound on board or sound card?
Your video drivers are what ?
Sound drivers are what?
Your DX install is what?

If you don't know any of the above do the following.
Start>Run>dxdiag.

The first Window, General, should list your motherboard, click on the Display and Sound tabs to show the driver versions running for each.
It will also tell you what DX version you have, should be one of the DX9 versions but unless you updated recently it's likely not the latest.
When you've made note of all that run the tests.


Has this computer ever run games ( What games? Does your video card meet the requirements?) or multimedia without crashing ?
Go into Device Manager: Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
Are there any exclamation marks or red circles in that list of hardware?

We need that information or we're making a blind guess ( I admit we can be pretty good at that but an informed diagnoses is way better.).
