Looking to get something better than the on-board sound that came with my motherboard. Also the Realtek drivers create a conflict with Eve online with an Intel 975X chipset. The only problem is that I have no available PCI slot. The only one on the board has my TV tuner in it.

I see that both Creative and Asus are to be releasing cards that are PCI-e X1. This would be viable but it looks that they are both future release. Does anybody have experience with the USB external sound cards? Do they really replace an internal card? I don't really need 7.1 or anything all that complex as I will be using a headset. I am just looking for CD quality music and a mic input so I can use Ventrilo.

so your motherboard has no free pci slots, but does have a free pci-express slot?

Buy this then, found this on newegg, should be what you need.

it is the only pci-express sound card I see on ne wegg.

Yup. That will do it. Didn't see that last time I went to the egg. Didn't know it was out yet. Thought the PCI-e was coming out later in the year.

yeah apparently even newegg doesn't know they have it. It was listed under the PCI category (there isn't even a PCI-express category)
