Hello out there. Been having this disconnection message for about the last 2 weeks & can find very little about it. AOL's solution is to check your modem cables so I replace my phone line with a brand new one to wall phone jack. Doesn't solve problem. Still get kicked off very periodically (times vary but sometimes can stay connect for a couple hours then will get kick off about every 15 minutes after that).
Had search pcmech & found a similar problem from kubie March 3rd,06. He was told by GLC that it is an AOL support problem. But I disagree as have a similar PC (daughter's) hooked up to same phone line & it never gets kicked off.
Problem started after I installed new Anti Virus/Firewall from Zone Alarm. Found another one that was having same problem after he installed Zone Alarm & was told if his modem was in router mode (don't know what that is) & his log on was providing a local IP with NAT, then he didn't need Zone Alarm Firewall & the XP's Firewall was ok. Unfortunately I don't have the same modem even tho' both PCs here are Compaq Presarios with Windows XP (one with SP 1 & the other with SP 2). Will give it a try but not hoping for much as have been lead to believe that installed Windows Firewalls are very basic & it has been alway advisable to go with a full blown one. If any of you out there have any other suggestions, it will be most appreciated. Thanks....

Are you talking about dialup or broadband?

The SP2 firewall is decent, but the SP1 one is almost useless.

Hi glc,

Have "dial-up" & have ordered SP2 from microsoft "slow mail" as to download to this PC would take over 5 hours. Still having problems & am thinking of going over to different ISP than AOL really getting fed up with them - can't find help thru them.

Thanks for your interest, one of only only I've gotten about this problem..

Postscript

Can't find anybody that knows or has had this same problem. Have given AOL almost all exclusive privaleges to access my PC via my Antivirus & Firewall (bundled - can't shut off either withou exposing myself to all the baddies out there)

For what you are paying for AOL dialup, you can probably get DSL from AT&T or your local phone company if you are close enough to the exchange switch. AOL's software package is nothing but horrible bloat. If you can't get high speed, there are dialup ISP's that do not require a software package, you can use what comes with Windows (connection wizard, IE, and Outlook Express). Earthlink is probably the biggest - they are decent. They OFFER (and actually push) a software package, but it's not required.

However, one of the biggest problems with dialup are the cheap junk software controlled modems that ship with today's computers - couple one of those with a noisy phone line and you have nothing but problems.
