Question, is it possible to get a new card fan for Gforce 6800 video card?

The 18 mo old card was working fine, (my motherboard died) I gave it too and installed it on daughters comp, 4 days later, the fan starts making noise.

Removed card from case and see that the fan has dropped down and in contact with plastic fan enclosure.

It seems to me that such an expensive item would allow for a replacement. I disassembled the card's fan enclosure and removed the fan and motor. There is a recess at the base of the spindle that should have a retainer ring. All I could find was what appears to be a black plastic or hard board washer which may have been the retainer.

Any thoughts?

yes it should be possible. Can you give more exact information (the video card manufacturer and the vid card model number)? If so I can try to find a spare fan online and give you a link.

Hi, thanks for the reply, it's an MSI NX 6800GT.

After some rangling through the MSI site, a Tech support request form, and an email reply from MSI that gave instructions I wasn't able to fathom till I googled GPU HSF, I emailed both of the addies that was supposed to help with the request neither responded.

I ended up calling the (non 800#) TS# and spent 30 minutes going over the info with someone that had to spend 20 minutes deciding whether they had the GPU/HSF.

For $12.00, (S&H) I was able to purchase the items needed to replace the fan/motor and I think the copper based HS enclosure.

I was pretty sure that such an expensive card had screws holding the items in place that there "should" also be replacement parts, especially since tha card is only about 18mos old.

yeah, with most computer components that have fans there are usually replacement fans etc. out there. Sometimes it just takes more looking then others.

glad it worked out.
