I recently moved and order AT&T DSL at home. When it came to order hardware I chose the one port Speedstream modem since I've had a Linksys wireless router WRT54G for about 3 yrs. After reading some of the posts here I'm tempted to return the modem and order the gateway.

Question,

Would I get a better wireless signal with this AT&T gateway around the apartment than with the Linksys wireless router WRT54G?

What are the advantages of the gateway over the router if any.

In the past I found WRT54G installation fine. I did had connection issues seldomly, but I wonder if that was more a firmware or line of sight issue than a hardware flaw.

Thanks.

i got the gateway when I got my DSL but I traded it with a guy at work who had a normal modem so that I could use my dlink router and then he had wireless to use with his wii.

I don't really notice much of any difference between them except my wireless is stronger how ever I have a 6 db antenna.

Can I use a Linksys desktop card with the 2WIRE that used to work with the WRT54G if I choose to order the 2WIRE Gateway?

The only advantages to the 2Wire are centralized admin and AT&T support. It's a decent router but the WRT54G is better. The 2Wire only has an internal antenna and the Linksys does have a stronger signal.

You can use any B/G/N card with the 2Wire, it's a standard G setup.

Thanks glc, I think I'll keep the linksys.

i'd go wit hthe basic modem and your own router. (so yes, keep the linksys)

if you ever switch ISP or something that gateway probably wouldn't be usable, where the linksys is still useable.
