Codec Help

A video file that used to play fine now does not have any audio. Windows Media player 11 says that the missing codec is -0010-8000-00AA00389B71} but I can't seem to find it. I've tried installing the Vista Codec Package 4.4.9 but that didn't work. Any ideas?

you might try re-installing media player (I think you can do that through add/remove programs)

you could also try using an alternative player. VLC media player plays nearly every video file type and is very resource friendly.

i didn't see windows media player in the add/remove programs window so i tried vlc media player. it works like a charm. thanks a lot for your help.

Just for future reference, Windows Media Player isn't in the initial Add/Remove Programs screen. When that screen loads, you have to click on Add/Remove Windows Components at the left side of that box. It will then be at the bottom of the next list that pops up.

that seems to apply for windows xp. is there an equivalent process for windows vista? the closest thing i see on the programs screen in vista is "turn windows features on or off" but i don't think the option for windows media player is there.

Ah, my bad. I overlooked that you said Vista. After Googling for 20 minutes or so, I found pretty much nothing for an answer as to the reinstall/repair of WMP 11 in Vista. It sounds like they integrated it into the OS, so unless they come out with a patch for it, I don't really know how you'd fix it.

I have vista on my home computer so whe nI get home later today I'l play with it and see if it can be done.

for now, give the VLC player a try (I like it a lot better then windows media player for playing video)

there is a discussion on the microsoft forums about reinstalling WMP11 on vista (and strangely, no MS people have responded with good solutiuons) but there are some suggestions there that helped some people.

however, some people have said that downloaded and installing wmp11 for XP has fixed it on vista, and it sounds like it's worth a try.
