View Full Version : How to find your email incoming/outgoing server info

Hey all. Setting up an acct. online and am being asked for incoming/ outgoing server info?Where do you find this? Have went to my provider site and can find no links or contact to find it. Is the info somewhere on my comp.? Probably a 101 question but have never had to have this before.

Thanks, Yes my provider is Comcast. Was setting up an acct. on craigslist for use with my yahoomail. Contacted Comcast and they said that I'd have to get that info through Yahoo but can find no contact site for this kind of info.

In the Incoming mail server field, enter: pop.mail.yahoo.com
In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, enter: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

That's it? Heck... 2and2 with the info from comcast and I should have figured that out!

Free Yahoo accounts are not POP/SMTP enabled, it's webmail only. I'd advise you to add a Comcast e-mail address dedicated to this and use that.

GLC , i donot understand 1 thing, when we use a yahoo or hotmail account, we sign in to it and use there mailing servers to send and recieve e-mails(correct me if i am wrong).

What does it has to do with the mailing server of the ISP that we use?

For example when we sign in to our hotmail account to send e-mail to a person who has account on yahoo, we actually connect to the Mailing Server of the hotmail account (the domain name of the hotmail is resolved to IP address) and then when we send an e-mail to the person who has account on yahoo(the IP address of the yahoo is resolved to its domain name).

What does the mailling server of ISP has to do with this?

i have a free yahoo.co.uk address and use it with outlook so it is definately set up with the above servers.

however on mine, NTL dont allow you to use 3rd party mail servers so i had to use NTL for my SMTP server.

When you are using Yahoo or Hotmail, logging in using a web browser, you are not using POP/SMTP, you are using HTTP mail.

Comcast also blocks port 25 to stop use of 3rd party SMTP. Most US ISP's do to make it harder for spammers.

If you need a free web email account that you can access with outlook or eudora get a gmail account.

I'm still confused as to what's actually going on here. Craigslist shouldn't be asking for your servers, just your address. Do you really mean that you're trying to setup your yahoo account in an email client?

Gmail for the win!
yahoo's refusal to allow mail retrieval through outlook is a nuisance (although i still use my yahoo account).

as i said i use yahoo free email account with OUTLOOK using POP3 and SMTP. though my SMTP is my ISPs as they block the 3rd party.

maybe its different in USA but my yahoo.co.uk one works fine
