So i purchased an EVGA 8800 GTA 320MB last week and i got it today. When i tried to go install it it wouldn't match up with the back of my case/pci-e slot(meaning if i had it in the proper place over the pci slot, it wouldn't go trhough the back properly). is this a common thing?

No, it's not. What case do you have? You need to open up 2 pci slots because that card is so wide.
I've also got a silly question: Are you sure the motherboard has a PCI-Express graphics slot?

yes the board has a pci-e slot, im currently using a 7300le pci-e card. when i try to but in the 8800 and line it up with the back, the pci-e slot just just a bit higher and it doesn't line-up, is this just a flaw in the design of the board and im screwed?

PCI Express hardware is standardized, so your motherboard should support it just fine.....

Can you tell us what kind of motherboard and what kind of case you have?

If you could provide a picture as well, that would help out greatly.

well it turns out that my computer is set up backwards compared to most, IE I have to open my case on the left hand side rather than the right, thus making it backwards, and thus causing the problem(the cards fan is pointed up, rather than down, taking up space it shouldn't), it just really frustrates the hell out of me that it is, it and nothing can be done.
Unless of course i get a new MB and case, which just sounds like a lot of work for a novice like myself -_-.

Most cases open on the left, but you're right that the card should have the fan pointing up. If this is a self-built computer, all you really need is to transfer everything to a new case. If it's a name brand, that may not work at all.

I'm still not sure I understand the issue; most cases open on the left, but it sounds like your PCI slots are accessed from the right?? What kind of computer is this? Or what kind of case?

This sounds like a BTX setup to me - is this a custom build or a name brand? I suspect it may be a Dell - and if so, the Dell power supply doesn't have enough guts to run that new card.

it was a gateway given to me about 6 months ago, i pruchased a 500W psu and a video card in anticipation of bioshock commin out shortly and hellgate london comming out in 2 months, i installed the psu fine(first tiem doing so), computer back up and running, just the video card won't fit into the set-up, making me REALLY angry.
I think the only option i have now is to get another mb and case which will run me another $200 on top of the $500 I already spent on the ps and vid card, but i have no experience setting up/building a computer form scratch.
