could someone please explain what the difference is between these routers, because I see none in the descriptiions.

the Linksys WRT54G and the Linksys WRT54GL

then also, on this router, is it's only difference between the 2 above that it supposibly has better range?

Evidently the L is for Linux. More info here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G).

The WRT54GL is a reissued older version of the WRT54G that uses Linux-based firmware. The newer versions of the WRT54G use VXWorks, which has had some rough times. We recommend the GL as being one of the best standard G routers out there.

The wonderful thing about the WRT54GL is that it can be flashed with one of many available third party firmwares (DD-WRT being the most popular one). These enable many new features/tweaks which are generally only found on more expensive routers. I've had my Linksys WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT for over a year now and can say nothing but positive things about it.

well the feature I need the most for this setup is good range going through a few thick walls, hence why I'm looking into the WRT54GR; it is advertised to have a better range but I'm trying to figure out how much of that is just advertisement.

Reviews (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=WRT54GR+review) aren't too good on the R router with rangebooster. It seems that the rangebooster works okay but the router itself has some reliablity issues.
