netgear or linksys

Hi, Just bought a netgear wpn824 router. Now I'm not sure if I should have bought a linksys wrt 54gs. The sales person said that the netgear was better, But when I got home I was doing some checking and now I'm not sure which is better.

Which would you say is better. The Netgear wpn824 or the Linksys wrt54gs.

My system is a HP Dv9000 laptop the network adapter 802.11a/b/g. I play cod 2, CS. Pings are around 50 to 80 with my ethernet throught my linksys BEFSR41 router. I was going to go with the linksys but I never had a wireless router and was going by what the salesman said.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

glc I know they say ethernet is the way to go for gaming, which is what I have now. Is the wrt54GL good for gaming? If not can you recommend a router.

Really, once you have a router working, it doesn't matter what you have if it does the job. At the $30 to $70 price range most routers are pretty much the same as far as just usability day to day. They do what they need to do and sit there.

Where the differences come in is if you have a weird wireless card you need to work with, or your pushing the wireless range, or have advanced needs in the software. If your hooked up to standard ethernet, any one name brand box is going to work just as well as the other.

The WRT54GL out of the box will work just fine for normal needs. If you find that you need more port forwarding or other features to make gaming easier, you can look into replacing the stock firmware on the WRT54GL later on with DD-WRT.

You probably will not be able to find a GL in a retail store. Order it from Newegg or another online vendor.

As glc said, it's rare to find the GL model in stores. They usually have the GS or an older WRT54 variant. I would order from newegg to know what your getting.

I second the Linksys GL router. I have to replace my SMC7004VBR that stopped working, and I replaced it with Linksys GL router. Its working great.
GLC, I really lucked out and was able to get it at a local Brick and Mortar store, MemoryExpress, for a fair bit less then Ncix.

Hi, I just received my linksys WRT54GL. I bought it to replaced my linksys BEFSR41 router because of the wireless feature. I have 3 laptops and an xbox 360 on it, they are all hooked to the ethernet. The wireless will not be used all the time, but it will be used. How do I set up security for it. I am no where near and expert at networking, I just know my around a little. I see all types of setting but I don't know which ones to set. I have comcast cable, and Windows XP media.

Is there a way to tell if someone is trying to use or is using my wireless access. Like a neighbor.
