I have just got a cable internet connection that works on my laptop all good. But the technician and me could not get it to work on my desktop. There is no routers or networking involved, only the cable modem. When I connect the modem to the desktop through the ethernet port a bubble comes up saying its connected at 100mbps ect. But no packets are sent or recieved and i cannot access the internet. All ip settings are correct. any help would be appreciated

You have to power-cycle the modem each time you connect a new device or it will not accept it. If you want to run more than one computer, it's best to get a router. It's a good idea to get a router anyways as it provides you with much better security than connecting directly to the modem.

The thing is the technician originally set up the modem on the desktop but he couldnt get it to work so i then tried it on my laptop and it worked perfectly first time. i once had a network set up on the desktop so i will try to delete the network settings.
thanks
