I have set up filezilla on my home computer and I want to use it as an ftp server. I have seen many instructions on how to set up the computer, router, and software. I am still have problems. I am wondering if someone is willing to spend some time walking me through this and get it working?
Thanks

I'll give it a shot. I've set up filezilla as a server accessible on my LAN (but left my router blocking outside access).
Firstly, do you want people 'out there' beyond your router to be able to access the server?
Can computers connected to the same router log in to the server right now? If not, we need to get that working first.

I can not access my computer from my laptop.
I do want to be able to access my computer from outside my network

Once you install filezilla, you should have a 'server monitoring' window or task-bar icon (a red and yellow FZ on my computer).
Open that tool, and click 'edit' and 'users'
To allow anybody to connect, create a user called anonymous, and give them no password. Select the directory they should have access to, and decide if they get read, write and delete access (presumably you'll need at least read access...)
To control access, create a user with a name other than anonymous and give them a password.
To log in to a user other than anonymous, either use an ftp client that lets you enter a username and password, or in your webbrowser enter the following in the address bar:
ftp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@YOUR_IP
for anonymous uncontrolled login, just type ftp://YOUR_IP
Let us know how that goes!
FYI, firefox displays files in an ftp server as links. This is fine for downloading, but makes uploading impossible. Internet Explorer when it goes to an ftp site basically turns into regular windows explorer, and you can copy and paste the folders and files in and out of the ftp server (if you have the appropriate priviledges, of course).
Various ftp clients exist, (Such as the FileZilla client) that handle the file upload/download/browsing their own way.

No luck!
if you are behind a router on your "home" pc, you have to forward port 21. it is the default ftp port.

most ISP's will block the common ports to keep individuals from running servers, try a different port other than 21
A DYNdns account is also nice if you have a dynamic IP adress

The ISP issue is something we'll have to deal with, but it doesn't explain why you can't connect to the server from within your own network. Are you running software firewalls on the server or on your laptop? If so, tell them to allow port 21 (Or to allow FTP, whichever option is available). The server must allow incoming connections, as well.
IF you're running a firewall, what kind is it?

I have become frustrated with this. I have mcafee for a firewall. I have setup mcafee to allow ftp connections. It still does not work even if the firewall is disabled. I have a linksys wrt54g router. I have also forwarded port 21 and several others. My ip does not change. Typically if you shutdown or pull the power on your router and modem you would renew ip. I also have two modems in the house so that may be why it stays the same. I am stumped at this point. I do not know what else to do.
Thanks
