ive been looking around for a new mouse, and i cant decide between a logitech g5 laser mouse
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104191)
or a logitech mx518 optical mouse

other than needing different mouse pads, is there really a difference between optical and laser? if not, im gonna go with the logitech mx518. its 5 dollars cheaper (BUT i'd have to get a new mouse pad) and has 2 more buttons.

From what I am told, optical is more precise.

Laser has increased resolution, but optical works on pretty much every surface while retaining accuracy. Your call.
I got a laser mouse and I couldn't use it properly. I went back to my optical until I could get a Func pad with a rough surface; on this kind of surface the laser is a pleasure to use, very precise and you don't run out of mousing area.

If your a gamer, a Laser mouse is a must. But remember, the mouse pad that you use is as important as the mouse. I know people that buy a G5 and then use an old cloth mousepad. What a waste. Get a Razer eXactMat (like me! =]) or an icemat...ect.

I've found that laser mice work much better on more surfaces than optical mice. I'll never go back to an optical mouse.

I noticed hardly any difference actually, between my old Logitech mouse and the G5, perhaps its just me, only difference i did see was the Optical refused to work on my 4D Steelpad whereas the laser did enjoy a night on the SteelPad.

well im sure with either id be alot happier than with this stupid "ball" mouse is still have. and no i dont play games on my old POS computer, but just using the internet is hard enough with this thing clogging with lint all the time haha
If you don't play games or do exacting work, just get a basic Logitech or Microsoft optical - cheapies will work just fine.
