So I setup my new system, installed my OS and then powered off. Installed a hard drive, powered on to format it... formats, so I shut down to connect something else. I hit the power button, and nothing - everything starts up, fans, drives, but I get no display. I re-installed the graphics card, took out the cmos battery, everything I can think of... help?

What was the device that you installed, which led to it not working? Have you tried taking out that device and running it to the last known working point. Also, try the thread that says "Having trouble with a new build?". I'm at work, so I can't copy paste the URL, but its a sticky. You must remove your motherboard while doing that.

I removed all devices actually - just have CPU and RAM installed to at least see if it will post...

Does the motherboard have onboard video? You'd need your video card installed as well as one of the minimums, as listed in that troubleshooting thread.

No onboard video... this is one of many problems I've had with this new pc so far... should I just RMA or am I missing something?

Is this happening to the system in your sig?

Do you have the motherboard out of the case right now?

In your sig, what does "Pwnage" mean? Is that a typo or is it "leet speak"?

This system hasnt failed to dissapoint me... the best part about it was the case.

The mobo is in the case... what difference does it make if its in or out ? (serious question)

Pwnage, hmmm, leet speak, me thinks.

Believe it's, derived from 'Ownage' meaning to annihilate the oppositon. First used in Warcraft III where somebody mispelt ownage, its also a common error as the o and the p are next to each other. I presume what he's saying is its going to be totally excellent when it arrives.

next week we'll learn about 'roflcopteroflmaololskaterz'

In reply to the question at hand. If you've tried taking everything out and starting again, with still no luck, I would try trouble shooting the graphics area, test the graphics card on another computer or something, or perhaps try another cheap-o graphics card on the motherboard. Could be a connection fault that came from ESD or general bad luck. My DVD Drive refused to properlly work, after some trouble shooting I established it was the motherboard connection as I had tried different DVD Drives/Cables etc.

The mobo is in the case... what difference does it make if its in or out ? (serious question)With the motherboard out of the case you eliminate the chance that the motherboard is shorting/grounding out to the case. When a motherboard does short/ground out to the case you get exactly what you're seeing...the system appears to power up but no image on the monitor.

Whenever I build a new computer I assemble the core components out of the case with the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and try for the first POST that way...this is to ensure the core components (motherboard, CPU, CPU heatsink, 1 stick of RAM, video card, power supply, monitor and keyboard) are working okay. If the system doesn't POST then I know one of these components is bad and can start to swap parts to see which one is the problem.

Take a look at this thread: "Having problems with a new build? Try this." (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=12753)

Thats leet speak. The story that I have followed, was way back when in a game like doom original or something, when you killed someone it would say Owned, but they made a typo, so it say Pwned. Now people say you got pwned, or that was major pwnage, when you get a good kill or what not.

EDIT: sorry, people beat me to it, I was typing, then had to do something, then finished ty ping, and by the time i posted people already posted.
