I got the following message :
Verizon FiOS Internet Service is not currently available for your address. Our network is continually being expanded, and we don't want you to miss the opportunity to get this state-of-the-art Internet service. With Verizon FiOS Internet Service, you'll be able to take advantage of the most advanced applications on the Web today - and ensure you're ready for the next generation of Internet applications.
It's got to get to NYC eventually ; right ?

I'm asuming that you don't currently have the service, right?
I had someone down the street from me who had Verizon DSL, who was notified months later after getting the service that it wasn't available in his area. He's still using it, so apparently it is.

No I don't have FIOS, currently.
Yes I'd love to get it ( I've had Verizon DSL since 2000, with early glitches ).
I'm willing to go through early adopter agony, once again, for this.

Tom - AT&T is in the process of turning on their U-Verse service (Fiber to the Node + UDSL) all along the east coast.
Pam - A good friend of mine in Manhattan has FiOS...I'm sure the rest of NYC will get it within this year.

I'm practicing patience but I really wish I didn't have to.
Heck - I just wish AT&T would give me 3 mb DSL - my line can handle it (tested by a line tech to 4200) but they won't sell it to me. 1.5 is all they will do. I guess at 20 bucks a month I shouldn't complain.

EDIT: I checked to see if U-Verse is available in my home town and it isn't. My family has had cable for 8 year! I'm ready for a change of pace =\

We now have 10Mb service available for an additional $10, but lets see.. all I do on the internet anymore is e-mail and surf... do I really need to double up my speed?

But FiOS and U-Verse are also IP based video delivery systems. VOD, local channels, premium channels, traditional 'cable' channels, HD content...as well as 10Mbit home connections. All on one pipeline that can hold 4-5x more than the standard cable copper wire.

I've got all that now... with the exception of 10Mb which I really don't think I need (but could have).... not that I could have fiber optic service ... we don't have that here yet.

I had dialup service for almost 15 years. The minute (I mean literally the very minute) FiOS was available, I signed up. I had been following Verizon's progress carefully as they negotiated the contract with my county government, got the approval, published the construction schedule, started digging in the neighborhood, etc.
It rocks. After having dialup for so long, I opted for the least expensive broadband, which is consistently 5 up, 2 down (EDIT: Duh, 5 down, 2 up). The tv service is incredible, no nasty compression as the satellite companies do. I didn't choose the VOIP service since I'm only maintaining the landline for my alarm service.
FiOS is my new favorite thing in the world ;)

I want it all, YESTERDAY! Vegas isn't on the list, yet. It's only 10 major cities I heard, right?

Glad you like your service. One correction - DirecTV and Dish Network have moved their HD and SD content to MPEG4 - the quality is outstanding - especially the HD content.

This site says 16 states currently:
http://www.fiberexperts.com/fios-availability.html
Click on Nevada and you get:
"FiOS Internet Service
Fios is currently not available for the state of Nevada. However, this state is within Verizon's territory which means Verizon has plans on making FIOS available at a later date. Please check back frequently for updates. The current states where FiOS is available are - California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington.... There are currently 16 states that have FiOS activity, the next state could very well be Nevada."

So you don't mind "HD Lite"?

So you don't mind "HD Lite"?
MPEG4 is the broadcast standard for HD content. There isn't a major provider that isn't moving from MPEG2 to MPEG4. MPEG4 allows a 1080i signal where a SD signal once dwelled.
Do you really thing FiOS is giving you uncompressed HD content? Don't kid yourself. An uncompressed HD signal looks something like this (considering 720p broadcast):
720v x 1280h = 921600
921600 x 30fps = 27648000
27648000 + 48000(2 ch. HD audio) = 27,696,000 or 27.6Mbits of bandwidth.
A 1080i signal is about 1/3 more and a 1080p signal is about 2/3 more.
MPEG4 takes that 27.6Mbit signal down to a very manageable 2+Mbit signal (depending on compression used - most are going with Apple's H.264 so just over 2Mbit is about right).
Oh...and don't think your local over the air (antenna) broadcast is full, uncompressed HD - most broadcasters are moving to MPEG4 as well as it's less of a drain on their system resources.

Luckily, I was able to get their 15/2 service when we moved into our new house in Seattle. I love it and it is really great not having to wait all the time. I can get a steady 1.8Mb/s downstream if I have a good connection on the other end :) I would never give up my FiOS. It was also the same price as Comcast so it was a no brainer.
Hmm - is CT now a split state - some AT&T areas and some Verizon areas?
