4 pin CPU fan to 3 pin motherboard

I recently bought a new processor(AMD Opteron 170 (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103586)) and after i had installed the new processor i went to plug in the CPU fan cable and noticed that it was a 4 pin and my motherboard(DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR) has a 3 pin plug. I read online that you just eliminate the 4th prong and shift the plug to(in my case the right) however i am unable to do this because there is a capacitor in the way that physically obstructs the connection.

Is there an adapter or extender that would allow me to connect the 4 pin plug to a 3 pin motherboard connection where it wasn't interfered with?

Not yet. Your best bet is replace the fan with a 3 pin fan or a 4 pin Molex fan.

Adapter wires are available,but the majority of them,are for power only,no rpm sensor wire.
If you don't care about monitoring the rpm,you could get one of them.
You can also get a 3 pin fan to replace your current one(as alredy suggested)

Alfie, please link me to an adapter. Note that this is not a 4 pin Molex fan, it's more like a floppy power connector.

If you can adapt, you have to turn smart fan off in the bios.

I don't care about monitoring the RPMs- all i want to do is be able to use the processor. I really don't want to spend the cash, at least right now, on a new CPU fan, so what adaptor can i use or were you talking of Molex? Because i was talking about the 3 pin CPU fan plug that i can't fit my new CPU fan power cord into...

Also as a last resort, could i possibly pull out the 4th pin and then dremmel down the plastic since normally it would not be used anyway?

Why not use a regular 3 pin fan adapter that you can plug into your power supply still eliminating the 4th pin?

Sorry,thinking molex to 3 pin.
You could cut off the end connection and splice in a 3 pin connector(I would think),that complies to your motherboard.

Ah, Figured it out..Use a 3 pin fan extension cable. This will allow you to eliminate the 4th pin while still plugging your fan into the mobo.
