My Plextor manual says it can read DVD-RAM discs using a set-top box. How do I go about reading a DVD-RAM disc? I can't find any info on a "set-top box".
The Panasonic DVD Recorder I'm looking at buying only uses DVD-RAM discs to record from TV so I'm trying to figure out how I'd read it on my Plextor 750A drive.

Your manual says that the Px-750 drive can read DVD-RAM from set top boxes. To read a DVD-RAM disk just insert it like any other disk. The Plextor drive you have now can read and write to DVD-RAM disks.

Where are you?
DVD-RAM disks are not widely used in the US and they're difficult to find.
That alone is reason enough not to buy a set-top recorder that requires them if you're in the US.
As for how you read them in the drive, the same way you'd read any other disk that is compatible with the drive.
By the way, I have a very ordinary Lite-On and it lists DVD-RAM disks as compatible.
So does, Sony, LG, Samsung, Asus, and every other current DVD drive I've seen.

USA. I read a lot of DVD recorder reviews which mention poor recording quality (ie. Philips) and some of the best reviews I've seen are for Panasonic recorders which use DVD-RAM. DVD-RAM discs are sold on Ebay.

You've got some homework to do.
Start here and branch out : http://hometheater.about.com/od/toppicks/tp/aatpdvdrecorder.htm
edit : You'll note they're not limited to DVD-RAM.

I usually record to RW media on my set top so I can reuse it. If it's something I want to keep, then I can burn it to R media after I cut out the commercials.
