This was issue #2...(I work at a PC repair place on weekends)
So Saturday morning, I was given a Sony VAIO that was constantly running at 100% from startup. The tech who worked on it Friday managed to narrow it down to a SVCHOST.EXE process.
So I jumped on google, searched the string that was hogging the CPU and everything pointed to a corrupted MSI.DLL related to the Microsoft Update. (Using PROCEXP.EXE, I was able to suspend or kill the process.) The owner said that it began doing that after trying to connect to a WiFi spot in an office he frequents. (at this point, I uninstalled the Linksys software)
Anyhow, I turned off Autoupdates, applied some fixes from MS that were supposedly only for paying customers but after rebooting, it was still pegging at 100%. I searched some more but everyone was having the Update problem. I tried updating the drivers from the Sony website but that didn't help. Finally, in PROCEXP.EXE I sorted the processes by most intensive, held the pointer over the svchost.exe which popped up a small window listing all services running in that process and grabbed a PrintScreen. I pasted into Paint and began disabling each service listed one by one. I would suspend the process, stop the service, and resume the process. Finally, I stopped the Network Connections service, (which also stopped Windows Firewall/ICS service) resumed the process and it no longer went to 100%. It never did fully stop the service but enough to stop the hogging. So I disabled the service completely, downloaded the latest driver/software for the wireless USB adapter and rebooted.
With the service disabled, you cannot see the connections in the Control Panel but you still have connectivity. I installed the Linksys software, rebooted, set the service to Automatic, rebooted and the processor was no longer running at 100%! I setup and tested the wireless connection, also tested the Ethernet connection, both worked fine. I rebooted the laptop several times just to make sure. But all was good after that. Only thing is I failed to make note of the software version from Linksys that I uninstalled. So I can't say for certain whether the solution is disabling and reenabling the Network Connections service or updating the Linksys software or a combination of both. Anyway...hope this helps someone as well...condensed version follows. :)
1. Uninstall Linksys Software/Driver.
2. Reboot, Disable the Network Connections service (will also stop the Windows Firewall ICS service.)
3. Install latest software from Linksys website, Reboot.
4. Set the Network Connection and Windows Firewall ICS service to Automatic (or manual, your choice).
5. Reboot, CPU won't run at 100%.
Keep in mind that this will vary from one maching to the next. Remember, everyone else with similar symptoms was having issues with the Microsoft Update files, while the VAIO showed similar symptoms, it was something totally different.
