Sata Driver....?

It has been a while since i last formatted, and i forgot what Sata driver to get for my Asus K8V with my new WD 750GB drive.

Also, what would be a minimum partition size for XP?

You should be getting drivers from the Asus site, not a 3rd party site. It's even easier getting it off the motherboard CD.

I would not put XP on a partition smaller than 10gb, and even then, do not install any programs on C.

I used to set the first partition to 15GB if XP and programs would be installed but found that many people don't know how to save files to anyplace but My Documents and the partition would fill up fast and the data storage partitions would be empty. If the person understands that they have to save their files to the other partitions then I just show them how to move their files from the C: partition to the data storage partitions. But if they can't grasp the importance of moving the files so that C: doesn't get filled up, I redo the drive to one big partition and let them fill My Documents up to their hearts content. The last computer I worked on I installed a new 320GB HDD and just left it as one partition...should be awhile before the person can fill that one up.

The absolute minimum size I would make the C: partition on a WinXP computer (if I even break the HDD into more than one partition) is 40GB...but lately I've just been making one partition per HDD. A lot of people don't seem to understand there are other places to save their files to besides My Documents.

Cricket, you can very easily repoint My Documents to anywhere you want.

And any programs I am installing, I would just change it from "C: blah" to "D: blah" . Correct?

You MAY not need a driver if you hook the drive up to the VIA controller and set it in the bios to standard SATA, no RAID. If you use the Promise controller, you need the Promise SATA driver (ATA mode).

OK.......my current OS(on the raptor) has a lot of stuff that my wife uses to log into a program at work. So I want to keep that installed, and also want a fresh install of XP on the Big WD drive.....so a dual boot setup with an OS on each drive.

Is there an easy way(small program) to dual boot......so my wife can use the computer without asking me everytime how to switch from one to the other?


I also received a version of XP 64-bit, previous owner moved onto vista and gave it to me. Any advantage of installing this on its own partition to mess around in? I am kinda thinking it might be pointless, but since I never messed with a 64bit OS, and I got it for free, I could see what its like.
Is it worth the hassel?
