Need a little help here. Just purchased a usb enclosure for a HD I had in another computer. I had it in the tower but needed room inside so I purchased the usb enclosure. I installed the HD inside the new encloser as directions and started up computer. I can see that it has picked up the new device and has identified the storage device under MY Computer as removable Device G. When I try to double click on it, I get a box that says I need to insert a disc. Even when I try to copy something to that G drive it asks for a disc to be inserted. Any ideas?

Are you sure the drive letter for the optical drive didn't get moved when you connected the external HDD? What does Disk Management say?

looking under disk management, it says it is Disk 1, removable, G, but does not show anything else or open any other box. i have not changed any settings for drive path.

Disk management should not see your external drive as a removable disk, it should see it as "new volume". It sounds as though cricket is correct, you may have some drive letters swapped around and when you are clicking on "G", it s actually your optical drive.

How do you have the jumpers set on your external drive? If you are using it as a storage device they should be set to slave.

I just looked in Disk Management on my computer and my external USB HDD just shows up as another basic disk drive. My card reader shows up as a removeable drive.

How many drives are currently installed or connected to your computer?

Not so, Kev - it needs to be jumpered CS or single. It's treated just like an onboard IDE controller with only one drive connected to a single head cable.

I suspect your housing may be defective.

To try and answer some of your questions. The bottom of the board that goes into the enclosure says to configure the jumper as a master. I have tried that as welll as making it a CS, neither make a difference. I have a DVD burner and CD player, 2 drives. I actually took the HDD out of this enclosure and re-installed it into my computer bay and it came up fine under Disk Management, I then formatted the drive and put it back into the enclosure and it would not recognize it in Disk Management as a HDD but as a Disc Drive and would ask to install a disc when clicked on. I even change the drive letter from G to C. The C path was what came up as the path when it was installed inside the computer. I have talked to Buy.com about returning it. Unless you guys can come up with something I have missed. thanks David

Return it and get an Apricorn housing. They may cost more but they are high quality and Apricorn has excellent customer support. Newegg sells them. They also come with a rebranded version of Acronis True Image.

I have returned the enclosure to Buy.co for a replacement. Will let you guys know how it goes with the second attempt.
