First build -review its compatibility and performace

This is going to be the first thing I've built in about 6 years. It's going to be an at home pc, and I plan on using it for dvr, video, and photo editing. I just want a fast machine that can run a few programs at once without problems, and that I can use for dvr. I'll prob put Vista 64 bit ultimate on here too.

I was trying to keep it cheap and fast, I just wanna make sure everything will work good and be sufficient. I may overclock this PC eventually, but not sure. Hope to get some opinions on my choices here. Comes to about 1K with the monitor.

swap out the power supply..
check for the Corsair 620 or the Enermax Infiniti series
$30 for a 500W power supply seems too shady

and swap the ram for corsair, seems to be the recommended brand around this forum
you might want to check to make sure that it is compatible with your motherboard

The power supply is the most important component in the computer. You'll willing to spend $100 on the case but only $30 for the power supply? Orion power supplies are not good quality units. The Corsair RazR suggested is what you really want (or at least something comparable in quality).

The GeIL RAM is actually okay to use.

The rest of the parts look okay. I would personally use a Seagate HDD and some other card reader than that Rosewill.

I'll look into the power supply, the reviews on it seem pretty positive though. As far as the ram i just found a deal on new egg for 40 bucks rebate off a nice cosair pair

Agree with other on PSU. You should switch out the second optical to SATA if you can. The P5K does not have native support for IDE so it is usually recommended to try and go SATA with everything you can. It does have a 3rd party IDE controller so if you need to go IDE it should work I have just heard it can be a bit buggy setting it up.

I dont see why everyone has a problem with Western Digital hard drives on this forum? I have the same model, I have exactly the same one that hes proposing and it works great? Western Digital are faster than Seagate in tests.

Well, looking at Toms Hardware charts I would find it hard to say WD is faster. They scores are all close and depending on the size of the drive you pick Seagate and WD swap places all the time. Overall I would have a hard time declaring either of them as "Faster" than the other.

Basically they are both good drives with good reputation for quality. However, HD do fail, regardless of who makes them, and Seagate gives you an additional 2 years on the warranty. I have had HD failures in a 3-4 year old system and it is kind of nice to know you can still send it in for a replacement.

So, if price is the same, performance is the same, quality is the same, but one has a better warranty backing up their product it seems normal to recommend the one with the better warranty.

Reviews are a good guideline but the Orion PSU is not good quality. Follow what others have suggested and purchase the best PSU that you can afford.
