Backing up files

Hi, I could do with some advice.

I need to back up a lot of files on my pc cos Im worried that if anything happens I might lose them.

Is an external hard drive the way to go? It would take an aweful lot of CD's to store all my files, they are mostly office documents, music and photo's.

The capacity you want/need totally depends on what your personal needs happen to be. Media such as video can easily occupy several gb's per title, so a large collection would require a large storage drive.

Some people purchase enclosed external hard drives such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136025.

Others purchase hard drives and external enclosures seperatly such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817362002. Typically, purchasing a seperate hard drive and enclosure will be slightly cheaper than a ready-made unit and the warranty will be longer too.

Brands can be somewhat personal too. Many people prefer Seagate hard drives, some others like Western Digital etc. Seagate is highly recommended on these forums. Apricorn enclosures are highly favored too: their quality is excellent and back-up software is supplied with each case too.

I would highly recommend an Apricorn enclosure, but they are not available in the UK. From what I've seen, most enclosures there are hit or miss - so I'd recommend a premade one from WD or Seagate.
