rookie power supply problems

well i was building my first computer and everything was running smoothly. but when i was plugging up my power supply i noticed that i only plugged in the 20 pin connector and not additional 4 pin connector. i turned on my comp and it started to run for about a sec. then everything shut off. i reopened my case then found the loose connector and immediately attached it. then as i powered on my comp nothing hppened, nothing at all. can someone pls help me out?

the power supply i was trying to use was 500 watts and should be able run the comp, im only using duo-core and a 8500 pci-e graphics card.

i forgot to mention that my motherboard led light stays on even though nothing else is

There *IS* no cut and dried answer - we have suggested you do an out of the case build, that's your next step.

We do need a link to that power supply - it's questionable in my mind.

Please post the complete system specs for this computer. List all the parts by brand and model.

And please do the out-of-case-troubleshooter in the link that blue60007 provided. At this point you don't want to continue to troubleshoot the problem with the motherobard in the case.

I'm going to guess your Motherboard has a 20-pin main power connection and a Separate 4-pin power connector. Be careful what you are doing on this. There will likely be 2 4-pin connectors in your wires from the power supply. One is the last 4 pins for the 24pin connector that gets separated away from the other 20. DO NOT USE that one. It may even be possible to insert into the 4-pin socket without too much force, but it's wrong. The correct CPU power connector has only yellow and black wires. That's the one you have to use.
I did this one myself - voice of experience - and powered it up a couple of times. The power supply sensed the short or current problem and shut off in like half a second. When I put it back in the right way the motherboard worked but the sound chip had died. But it could easily fry the whole thing.

hmmm. i inserted the 4 pin connector that comes with the other 20 into the 24pin socket.

i inserted the pins with the black and yellow wires into the 4 pin connector by the CPU, is that right?

i tried building the computer outside my case but had the same problem. could it be that i need a PS with more watts?

i tried building the computer outside my case but had the same problem. If you did the out-of-case-troubleshooter and the system still doesn't come to life, then one of those parts died.
