First build- Shuts off after a second

I'm doing my first build and when I turn on the computer, all the fans go for about a second then everything shuts down.
EDIT: I'm an idiot, I got my computer running but the monitor isn't on. I'll try and get more details tomorrow.

Ok, I did that and same thing- Monitor wouldn't turn on. I also put some speakers into it and there were no beeps.

The computer runs now. It's just the monitor not running.

if the monitor receives power but no signal, check the VGA or DVI cable (depending on what you have) in the back and make sure its in securely on both ends. if nothing happens after that, check everything. take out the RAM and put it back in, thats worked for me sometimes. check the video card. you can automatically rule out the hard drive. make sure cpu cooler is in tightly (but not tooooo tight if your motherboard is not sturdy but i trust ASUS). I don't think your power supply should have any problems supporting your video card but someone correct me if i'm wrong. oh and not to mention, check the video card, make sure its seated in all the way and in correctly.

I've already done all that. Everything has been checked, taken out, and put back. The monitor works, and I've tried a different monitor with that comp. The only thing I can think of is that somethings DOA.

It's always possible you've gotten a bad part, but sometimes I find that hard to believe for some reason.

I guess the cpu cooler fit right in cuz the cpu cooler you have doesn't support AM2 sockets.

Have you tried a cable to the monitor?

I'm assuming is a digital signal, so have you tried changing the input to digital on the monitor itself?

So you tried that monitor on a different computer, and tried a different monitor on that computer?

I don't understand the first question and don't know how to do the second. And yes, the last one is correct

That should have said: Have you tried a different cable for the monitor?

On the monitor, there should be a source, or input button. Try pressing that and seeing if you get something that says digital. That might work.

I believe the analog to digital signal option is only for modern LCDs since they can send out a digital signal via DVI, but if it's the conventional kind then that doesn't apply.

Ok so..

- Monitor is 100% good
- Cables running from monitor to pc is 100% good
- Video card is good (not too sure yet).
- You've checked everything.

right? Also do you have a spare PC with PCI-e to test the video card?

I have tried different cables.

None of the buttons on the monitor are working I guess because it's not getting a signal from the comp. It's just got the standby orange light and that's it.

Let me word it this way- I have 2 monitors. Both monitors work on the computer I'm using now. Neither work on the one that I'm trying to build

Test the video card. plug the one in your build into a pc with PCI express. If it isn't the video card then i'd say... well i'm not too sure. =/

I want to say the MB could be the problem but im not 100%.

I'll test that in a bit. The fan on the video card works at least. Also, how can you test if the processor is working?

Take the CPU and put it in a MB (that you know it works) with the same Socket and compatibility or place another AM2 CPU into the current MB.. it's a bit far fetched since I'm sure you don't have a spare AM2 socket MB but its the only way i know of..

Also if the CPU isn't working, I would think it wouldn't turn on.

If you followed that, the only possibilities are power supply, motherboard, CPU, ram, or video card - and you can only test by substitution.

Well the video card works- I tried that on this computer. And I've tried different RAM sticks on that so it's not the ram.

There's probably a chance that I'm a complete idiot and forget to plug something into the motherboard. Right now this is plugged in to the mobo-

CPU and Heat sink
1 stick of RAM
Video card
24 pin and 4 pin power connections
And power button from the case.

Does the video card have a separate power socket? If it does and you don't connect it, you will have no video.

Do you have a spare power supply to swap in? Rosewill units aren't the best quality.

I also noticed in post 3 you mentioned plugging speakers (plural) in, which sounds like you're referring to powered computer (audio) speakers. For CMOS beeps, you need to connect a simple case speaker - if you look at the wires running from the front of your computer case, one of them should be labelled speaker. Move the computer case close enough to your out-of-case setup so that you can connect this to the front-panel header on the board.

If when you fire it up this time, you still don't hear any beeps, disconnect the video card and the RAM, and fire it up again. The board should beep multiple times indicating these missing components, if it doesn't, I'd be leaning towards a defective motherboard - although there's no guarantees here.

I had this problem twice where it runs but nothing displays on the screen (no beeps etc). Both times for me it turned out to be bad RAM, so i'd recommend changing that with some in the pc thats working if possible.

I gave it to a friend who knows a lot more about building comps than I do. He gave it back to me still broken. He tested the power supply, and that works. I know the Video card works and I've tested different RAM (Same model and everything, just different sticks). This only leaves the processor or the motherboard. I looked at the reviews again and saw that there were some people with DOA motherboards, but no one says that about the processor. I'm planning on returning this mobo as soon as possible. Should I even bother returning the processor? It's one of the two...
