Budget - How much do you wish to spend on the initial purchase?
Ink - HP seems to not guzzle ink quite as fast as Epson or others, though the Epson and Cannon brands do have separate cartridges for the individual colors as opposed to HP's tri-color ones.
Future Use - Are you going for photo and text only, or is it possible you'll want scan, copy, and/or fax functionality down the road?

I like my B&W Laser Printer. (Text Only - No Photos) They cost more but they last longer and print better. It beats replacing those color inkjet cartridges. You may find that it is more economical to take your digital pictures on flash media to Wal-mart and print them there. There are advantages to having actual prints made. If you store photos you better back up what you have. Sooner or later your harddrive fails.
I like my $300 HP Color Laserjet 2600N.

I currently have a HP printer and it gives me all kinds of grief with drivers. The print quality is not that good either.
I previously had a Epsom and it was very good.
You probably don't need anything expensive if your primarily printing text. Try buy a printer that has separate CMYK ink cartridges so your only replacing the black when that runs short.
Also keep in mind the cost of the printer is relatively low, it's with the ink cartridges that these companies make their money so you may want to research that cost.
My 2600N installed on my router with the add printer wizard, have disk - I didn't have to install ANY of the HP crapware. I just threw away an Epson inkjet, it printed real nice when it worked. Problem was keeping it working - constant head clogging and it guzzled ink.
