Better DSL connection

I notice that players of online games, that have lower pings, have better scores. My ping to this game server averages 70-90, where milliseconds count. I would welcome any software/hardware and Windows tweaks that would improve my speed and connection. I have a 1.5M DSL connection. Upload- approx 1M. Living 25 miles from Des Moines IA., the hub is probably a bit far away, and may be the problem.
