no internet for old micron

my kids emachine blew up so i went hunting for a tower to get him back online.
i found a micron pc client pro with 1.5 p4 and 512 ram and 20 gig hdd with fresh reinstall xp pro already done to wipe any business data off.
i added an extra hdd and a dvd rw and it boots fine.
but no internet. great, the one think i really needed it for too.
maybe something wasen't fully installed or ?
it has a on board network and a seperate network card.
both are good in device manager.
when i plug into either, the uplugged status goes away in network connections.
tried doing a repair and it freezes and ends with unable to renew ip address.
this is a direct connection from my cable modem to the pc.
and it works fine now obviously.
being this was a business machine, is something disabled somewhere to prevent internet browsing?
and who knows why there is a second network card?

i uninstalled the drivers for both network adapters and let windows reinstall them ok. everthing looks good but no.
i ran cmd and there is no mention of hsd1.mn.comcast.net in the first line and no gateway listed.
i tried to move the extra adapter to a different pci slot and let windows find and install it and still no good.
is this really two bad adapters or just a bad mb??

If you're connecting directly to the modem, it won't take a new computer hooked up to it since it's registered to the first one. If you're lucky (and most cable companies work like this these days) you just need to completely power cycle the modem to be able to connect a different computer to it. If you're unlucky, you'll have to call the cable company and register the second computer. If you're going to be using both computers simultaneously or constantly switching back and forth, buy a router and you can plug in as many computers as you want.

boy, i spent alot of time for nothing. i forgot all about the modem being picky.
of course, if my stupid dlink wireless router had not kacked recently, i would have just plugged into it and been ok.
now i have a new linksys router and of course, it took a reboot of the modem to accept it.
now all is well, thankx, ray.
