Will my old heatsink/fan work?

I am going to install an AMD Athlon 1200 into an ASUS A7V motherboard. Is there any way I can find out if the heatsink/fan from an old AMD Duron 1300 will work?

As long as both processors are Socket A (Socket 462) you should be okay. From what I understand the Durons actually ran a little hotter than the Athlons so the heatsink should be able to handle the Athlon.

According to the ASUS PC Probe program, my AMD Athlon 1200 is running about 61 degrees celsius using the old fan from my AMD Duron 1300. Does that temperature seem a bit on the high side?

Yes, you need to take it apart, thoroughly clean both the heatsink and top of the CPU die, and use new heatsink compound.

I went ahead and cleaned the heatsink/fan assembly and applied a silvery compound I have from another job. It did not seem to help much.

I noticed that the fan speed is 3375 rpm. Could this be the problem? My other computer's fan with the Sempron 2500+ runs about 4000 rpm.

Different fans run at different speeds. If it is still 60C you may need to investigate you case cooling and check the heatsink for dust. The first Athlons up until the Thouroughbred XP (which I have) ran quite hot and if you could get it to 55 you would be good. My Athlon XP 1800+ runs idle about 45 and thats with a high performance ThermalTake cooler.

Liambl, your point regarding different fans running at different speeds is well taken. I talked to a friend who has a 64-bit Athlon and his huge 3000 rpm fan keeps the cpu temperature at 28C.

I've already cleaned my heatsink and I'm running without the case sides at 61C. I saw a brand new AMD heatsink/cooling fan on eBay for a mere $1.99 and I think I'll give that a try.
