You don's need IIS for remote desktop, just to be able to connect via a web browser instead of the full Terminal Services client. Normally you go through the start menu and find remote desktop under All Programs>Accessories (or just type mstsc at the run prompt) and enter your ip address there. For that to work you DO NOT need IIS installed. If you want to use any web browser instead of the real client, (like if the computer you're using to connect does not have the client) then you need IIS.

okay i will try this for some reason it wouldn't let me do this before, all i have to enter is my ip? thats it? i can use that method for when im trying to access from inside my wlan but not from outside... and no im not using 192.168.xxx.xxx as my when im trying to access from outside. i will try it and report back

From outside your lan you will need to use your real internet IP, and forward port 3389 in your router to the machine hosting the remote desktop server.

somehow it seems to have all righted it self thanks for the help, i ended up removing IIS and i guess i dint realize this but my isp likes to change my ip quite frequently. my file sharing is working again too :)
