Need help picking out parts for a new pc

Well my budget as of now is $300-600.... i need a pc for gaming and overall work. It doesnt have to have ZOMG 300 FPS!!!! but something that will last me for a bit. Im playing team fortress to on med/low settings and im getting low fps in some parts of the games (mostly when its getting chaotic) everything else my pc is just great. Only prob is its out of dates. HELPP

160 GB HDD
2gb Ram Memory(two 256mb, 512mb, 1gb)
2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor
ATI Radeon x800 Pro 256 MB AGP
250W Power Supply (i think) ASUS P4SD-LA

You can easily make a PC for moderate gaming for about $400 to $500. I'd suggest to stick to XP and personally, I'd go with an Nvidia PCI-e video card. An affordable one that should get the job done is the GeForce 7 Series. You also have to keep in mind that everything you get has to be compatible.. Start at Newegg.com and search for a motherboard that supports PCI-Express (which shouldn't be hard at all) and other features that you like. Then from there pick other parts, based on the MB (in terms of compatibility). But as far as a reputable brand for the MB, ASUS seems to be very good. 2GB of RAM should be sufficient and a as for power supplies. Sparkle power supplies are good and very cheap. Newegg has a couple of them. I hope this helps.
