What sound card do you have? I have Sound Blaster X-Fi under Vista and can use mic, no problem. So it is likely to be your settings not the driver. See this link here, it helped me:

How to configure Microphone under Vista (http://ask.europe.creative.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=ww_english_add,U={B8F60310-DA4F-11D3-94F4-00500463020E},Company={CEAE216D-8719-4C00-AC9F-03BC258F7B70},VARSET=ws:http://uk.europe.creative.com/, case=1774)

With usb mic it aint gonna be easier as you'd have 2 sound cards, Vista is messy with one already as you see... but it works :)

I have the Sound Blaster Advanced MB Audigy. I try to install the disc to get the drivers and apps but it gives me a message saying it it cant/doesnt rec. Many people of this problem all over the net but i dont think there is a fix for it :( Also, where it says set the mic as default, I cant even do that because the button is faded out.

Is that sound card certified Vista-compatible?

If the computer came with Vista, I'd be pestering Dell to help you get it working.
