You can get any Version you want but you would have to adjust some of the visuals accordingly.

I'm tempted to say: "XP" ... but that doesn't help. First question, though, is what's your budget?

I would say anything version of Vista EXCEPT the Basic version for you might as well go with Windows XP. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit edition on my main computer, but it's a little pricey but if I had to do it over again I think I would go with Vista Premium Version instead.

I bought a fast USB FLASH DRIVE SV-89 with 480 mb/s according to the manufacturer site but did fail the ReadyBoost requirement for Vista. Is anyone out there who adivise me on a good brand which will pass the ReadyBoost test ? Thank you very much.

Vista Home Premium is currently running in my PC and I notice 30% of memory(2GB) usage in my task manager just upon log in. I have not got any program loading yet. I don't the average memory usage for Vista Home premium neither. What is the memory usage can Vista offer in optimal condition ? I would like to get to the bottom of this if some tweak can lower it further down. Thank you.

Thierry.

That usage is pretty normal.

Here's a site to look at.

Here's my two cents:

Since your system specifications are pretty good, the decision to get one version of Vista over another should have nothing to do with your hardware. Your computer will handle all versions just fine.

Instead, the decision comes down to what you will be doing with your computer. If you want bare bones functionality, go with Basic. If you want multimedia, games, etc., go with Home. If you do a lot of work on your computer and you want ultimate control over the placement and contents of files, or, if you plan on running a server, or, if you want the highest level of security possible - look at Ultimate.

As has already been said in this thread, you'll want to consider what each version offers and for what price. Ultimate is pricey. However, there are ways to cut the cost down. I believe performing an upgrade from a previous version is less costly. Also, if you are a student your school may offer a discount for OS software. (Actually, my school offers a very nice discount as it has a deal with Microsoft. I paid just $18.00 for Vista Ultimate!)

Good luck with the choice! I think Vista is under-appreciated at the moment. It's fun and safe to use and I have had few problems with it.

For $18 I might even be tempted, and I am very happy with XP... It would go on a spare parts build, of course, as I'd keep XP Pro on this box  :)
