How can I tell if my pc has a sound card

The question means most likely you have a store bought computer, which means most likely, it doesn't.

One way to tell is to look at the back. If the speaker connections are only where the mouse and keyboard goes into, you don't have a sound card. If you have a second set of connections over where add-in cards can go, then you have a sound card.

To be clear, if you have the connections where the keyboard/mouse go, your sound is built into your motherboard, rather than a PCI card. Either way your PC is capable of making sounds. :)

A friend gave me a Dell 2400 on the back there is a place for three plug ins they are color coded red green and blue. I did not receive the speakers but I have some but all I have are two plug ins a red and a green. So this plug in slot must be built in to the motherboard.
So when I go to control pannel and click on sound nothing is highlighted and when i tried to play a cd I get the message where the media player cannot play because there is a problem and there may not be a sound device installed. I've gone thru all the troubleshooting for sound but nothing works. Is there something else I can do or should I just buy a sound card. Thanks
