I'm thinking about setting up one of my PC's as a media server. Can I use regular XP or Media Center 2005?
What exactly within the software is used? Is just sharing folders all you do?
Thanks

Depends on what you want to do with it.
You don't *have* to use the Media Center. If you want to still use its features, there are a few freeware options kicking around out there.
http://www.mythtv.org/ is one option. Can't vouch for it since I haven't really tried it.

I wasn't worries about the frontend. I was more worried about the "server" end of it. I want to make it a remote server so all my computers can see it.

It's possible to do it with XP Pro (not sure about Home) and have upto 10 computers connected to it. Just google for a tut as there's plenty of them about.
You could try a flavour of Linux to do it for you - it's free in most cases, will no doubt use less resources. Or if you really want try M$ new Home Server software.

What are you looking to do? Just share some folders / drives?
That's no problem. Just search for windows xp file sharing.

I pretty much wanted to share some drive.
I was thinking about the linux route, but figured since I have media center on it alread to just use that.
