suddenly-pictures loaded into "my pitures" file will not open..ie..when i click on each..nothing happens.

played around with some settings: "open with"-and now some images open with "paint"-others with "media player". The JPEGs open with paint//the "bitmaps with media player.

what caused this sudden malfunction-and-how can this be corrected so all images (JPEG/Bitmap etc) in "my pictures (and elsewhere) will open????

thanx!!

In XP, they normally open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Right click and use the "Open With" option again and see if that's one of the options. If so, click it and see if it changes them back.

Well, I have ever experienced that case, all my pictures couldn't open and the thumbnails disappeared. I think that is because some system dll files are unregistered accidently, so I run this command line
for %1 in (%windir%\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32.exe /s %1
After I restart, these functions become normal. For your reference.

Well, I was hoping the "Open With" would set it automatically for you. Now that I think about it though, that only works if the file has NO association.....if it has an associated program, Open With will let you open it one time with a different program but the other program will remain the default. Bummer.

If you want to try to do it the long way, you can go into the file types menu and set the "Opens With" program for each picture format. To do that, open My Computer and go to Tools, then select Folder Options from the list. Click the File Types tab and when it brings the list up, scroll down through it until you find each file type (jpg, bmp, etc). Click on each file extension once and in the bottom half it should give the "Opens With" properties. If it's not the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, then hit Change and select that program from the list. When you get through with all the picture formats you want to open that way, apply the changes and okay your way back out of there.
