Ok so I just built my new PC and I was wondering what would be the best anti virus, anti spyware etc etc programs to get. I would prefer them to be free but I will pay for one if it is significantly better. I just want the best protection without slowing my PC down immensely. Thanks a ton. :)

they say
Kaspersky-pay for

free
AVG free
Avast
AntiVir

I use these, all are free.
a-squared (scanner)
Spyware Guard (blocker)
SpywareBlaster (spyware blocker)
Spybot: Search & Destroy (spyware blocker and scanner)
Ad-Aware SE (spyware scanner)
SuperAntiSpyware (spyware scanner)
Windows Defender (spyware blocker and scanner)
AVG AntiSpyware (spyware scanner)
IE Spyad (spyware blocker)
A modified HOSTS file (spyware blocker)
Firefox with addons (safer browser)
AVG &ZA

Most free scanners are ran manually (not active protection), only have one actively running antispyware & one antivirus.

My setup (all free):

Avast
Spyware Blaster
Spybot: Search and Destroy
AVG Anti-Spyware
CCleaner (not really an antivirus or anti-spyware, but usefull to help get rid of crap)
Windows firewall
Windows Defender

Router Firewall

And most importantly: Good surfing habits combined with common sense.

This is what I'm currently using, they're all freeware:

Avira AntiVir
AVG Anti-Spyware
AVG Anti-Rootkit
SuperAntiSpyware
Spyware Terminator
SpywareBlaster
CCleaner
CookieWall
WinXP SP2 Firewall
Opera Browser

If I had to pay for security, I'd use:

NOD32 Anti-Virus
Spy Sweeper Anti-Spyware

If you want to buy then Kaspersky is an excellent piece of software, however I would buy the Steganos version as it's built using Kaspersky technology and is slightly cheaper too.
