this is a freinds laptop.
it's weird. if i boot to setup, it will be ok.
if i load windows, after about 2-4 minutes, it freezes.
he reloaded xp but no help.
what diagnostic steps can i try to help narrow down the problem?
thankx, ray.
note, i just tried safe mode and it seems stable.

If it works in safe mode, to me, it seems like a driver problem - a driver is loaded up on startup that is causing the system to freeze up. Are you using the recovery disc when you are reloading Windows?

no. just a generic window oem cd.
i just tried to boot and left it alone and not touch anything and it was still fine after 10 minutes.
i noticed that the cooling fan blastes on startup for about 5 seconds and then you don't hear from it again.
maybe it doesn't work right and it overheats??
note im running the check disc utility to see if that locks up as well.
that seemed to work fine as it must have finished and rebooted back to windows.
without touching anything, the laptop ran till the low battery alarm went off. when i started checking the power profile, it locked up.
and i did notice the fan run for a second once.
tha ac adapter does not seem to work since i plugged it in and the laptop did not see it. maybe the software for the ac power isn't installed yet?
