saving streaming audio files

When listening to streaming audio files are they stored anywhere on the hard drive?

I would like to save some files from those radio stations that have what I find to be enjoyable listening for those times when I cannot access the internet.

If these audio files are not stored anywhere on the hard drive is there any way to download them while listening to them?

Yeah, you can use a program called Total Recorder and it will record any sound played on your computer streaming or otherwise. But if you just want radio songs, just look for the mp3 files on the Internet, they are all over the place.

Thanks Harry. I'll give it a try.

I checked out Total Recorder. It appears that the demonstration copy will only record for 40 seconds and the installation is quite complicated. I hesitate to install a program that does not work to its full extent and then find that perhaps it does not work when the full version is purchased.

Is there another program that you might recommend?

If you've got a full duplex sound card you should be able to use any recording program to record what is being played. Even M$ Sound Recorder. I do it all the time for streaming files that I use as reference material for papers I write.

So I gather that you are just using a microphone and then recording the streaming audio right off the speakers.

It seems like doing it that way would result in a loss in the quality of recording.

Harry you are right on.

I was just about to ask about that. I thought that I could just turn on the sound recorder while I was listening to the audio and it would record the sound internally. However, when I tried it I found that nothing was recorded. When I checked the help on sound recorder it indicated that the sound would be recorded from an audio input device such as a microphone.

So, is there a way to internally record streaming audio?
