To store pirated files?
Please read our forum rules (http://www.pcmech.com/forum/rules.php), particularly rule 9.

well i dont want to download illegal software and i dont have any. I just want to know how to build a file server. I was just sayin i knew someone who built his own fiel server but thats what HE used it for. I just want to know how u build a file server.
There is no difference between a server and any other computer. Just build a computer with a hard drive big enough to store all your data. Being that you won't be running applications from it, you can use a motherboard with integrated video and it doesn't need an expensive processor.

yup, what glc said. I run an FTP server on my desktop so that I can access my files from anywhere. It's just a regular old PC that i built.

You might want to look into NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage)
