setting a drive as a slave

Hey everyone. Just recently I had a hard drive crash. I already got a new one, but now I'd like to set the old one as a slave that way I can copy the old data onto the new one. They're both SATA drives, so when I plugged the old one in and went into BIOS, the bios recognized that the drive was plugged in but its showing that both drives are masters. then when I go into windows, there's only one drive showing up. How do I make the computer see the second drive as a slave so I can copy the files over?

If the hard drive crashed then "why?".
If Windows only sees one drive is it the old one or the new one?

windows only sees the new drive. And the old drive, i'm trying to connect just so I can get the old files off it. I'm not gonna use it at all after I copy everything to the new one.

With SATA hard drives there is no "master/slave" setup since you can only have one hard drive connected per SATA port. Every SATA drive is a master.

Did you try going into Disk Management to see if the old hard drive shows up there?

Did you test the old SATA hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility?

Are you even sure you can get the data off the old hard drive? What kind of "crash" did it have?

Depending in why the drive crashed windows may not be able to see it and you may need recovery software.

No, I haven't checked it in disk management yet. when I didn't show up in windows I just came to the library, to start loooking up how to solve the problem :).

Nope, didn't test the old drive. It didnt' come with a diagnostic utility. How do I test it?

and I'm not sure what kind of crash it had either. It just stopped working suddenly. one day I went to turn on my computer, and it wouldn't load windows. It would just go to a blue screen, then the blue screen would disappeaer too quickly for me to read what was on it, then It'd go to a screen that told me windows didn't load properly, and asked me if i wanted to boot into safe mode. but even when I'd do that, it'd just repeat the process over again. I took it to a repair place, and they told me the hard drive failed, so i just got a new one and now i'm trying to figure out if I can save my old files.

Diagnostic utilities can be downloaded from the hard drive manufacturer.

ok, I'll try downloading the recovery software just as soon as I have internet access back on my computer. when I donwload the diagnostic utilities, what will I be looking for there? Or is it self explanatory once I'm using the software? thanks for the help..

Your hard drive manufacturer will have a utility and a readme on how to use it. They are pretty self-explanatory, just follow along. Run all the tests and post the results.
