hi maeery xmas to all :)

I have a gateway PIV notebook on which the motherboard hdd connector does not function.

.. Could i use an external usb 2.0 hdd to function as the unit's sole hdd? (in place of the internal hdd)??

If so- hurray--id load winxp and all other software onto it and my problem is solved!

otherwise, the notebook is unuseable.

I believ setp bios can assign and external drive to be first in boot order.

If the BIOS does support booting off a USB, it'll only take you twenty minutes to find out if it works or not..Other have done it:

Fred Langa has an excellent, illustrated, step-by-step article on how to get a bootable, lightweight installation of XP onto a self-contained, zero-footprint, USB thumb or flash drive:

WinUSB is a tutorial which allows the user to run a complete Windows XP version on an USB device/stick.
