Hello all,

I am running Vista Premium on my Toshiba Qosmio G30 laptop. Recently when I boot up I no longer see the b/w "Mcrosoft Corportion" screen before the blue login screen. So I'm thinking some file must be corrupted.

Another thing happens once a day. For the past two days. I would be surfing the net. Or not doing anything at all. Watching some TV while letting the laptop run. Sitting idle. Then suddenly i would hear the sound you'd hear when plugging in a peripheral into a USB port. "bingBING". Then the screen would go black for a second then come back. bingBING. Go black for a second and come back. This happend 3x in sucession. Earlier yesterday morning. But has been fine the entire day since. I've had the laptop on pretty much the entire day. Off for maybe two or three hours at the most.

Another corrupted file? I don't know but probably.

So I'm thinking once this happens more frequently. I might do a restore. Some one told me that the "received e-mails" would be intact after a restore. But just to be safe I'd like to backup the e-mails I've received that were put into specific folders. For example the "Bob" folder with a folder for "Nov 2007", "Dec 2007"...

Can you tell me what files and where to look to back up Windows mail received e-mqails? I was told to look for *.pst files. Didn't spot any. But when I did a search I only found 4 individual files. Not the actual folders.

Also, I'd like to backup the received e-mails for Mozilla Thunderbird.

I found the folders for both programs in "Program Files". But have no clue exactly what files to backup.

Please help. Thanks.

bingBing....USB ports have a power mgmt feathure that is turned on by default. Can turn it off via device manager.

So you think that could be causing the sound followed by the screen going black for a second then returning? Because the sound is exactly the same sound you hear when you plug in a pheripheral into the USB ports when the computer is on.

Found the Power Management tab and have deselected "turn off port to save power". Hope this stops the bingBING sound and the 1 sec screen black out. But the funny thing is this didn't start happening till roughly a week ago. I've had this llaptop since June. Go figure. Will see if this doesn't help.

As for my missing b/w Microsoft Corporation screen....probably a corrupt startup file or two. no big deal.

And about backing up e-mails...if some one could help me there.... :)

C:\Users\(USER NAME)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders

Just copy the entire folder and all the messages should be saved.

I;'m running Vista Premium. Under the Users directory\Username I just have the typical Pictures, Videos, Documents....etc.

I did find the Windows Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird bolders under Program Files. So I should still just copy all the files in those directories? Which file is the "received e-mails" file? The DAT file?

Thanks.

You need to select show all files and folders, then that will allow you to see the path that i wrote up there.

EDIT: You could also just use the export feature in windows mail.

Thanks for your advice. Found the files for Windows Mail. :)

And I Google searched the way to find the files I'd need to backup Mozilla Thuderbird's swettings and messages.

Welp, it did it again. 2x in a row. "Inserting into USB port double beep sound", black screen for 1.5 sec and screen returns. So far this has happened once a day. Vaguely annoying. But not bad enough for a "restore". Or worse a "reformat" (always the very last option IMHO). Any ideas? Any one can chime in on this.

Thanks.

Merry Xmas! :)
