Outlook on old HD to T-bird on new HD

I received a "new" used PC about a year ago. I set it up to run Thunderbird for e-mail, and Opera for browsing. I installed my old PCs HD as a backup drive. I want to get my old Outlook e-mails off the old HD and load them into my T-bird program.

My "new" PC is a Compaq Presario S5314ST running Windows XP sp2 and all updates are current. The old was a Micron that I had upgraded from ME to XP.

What I've tried so far:

1. T'bird import - it just finds the local Outlook files, which I have setup to work but don't use.

2. Outlook import - tried to get it to find the old .pst file but it's too limited to do that.

3. Copied outlook.pst from the old HD \windows folder to the new \windows folder. Outlook didn't find it.

4. In Outlook, I've tried to select File, Open ..., but the "Open" menu is not active unless I'm in my Inbox, in which case it wants to open an e-mail only and there are no other available selections.

Any help would be appreciated.

To me it sounds like you skipped a step way back then and are trying to make up for it.
First, to find out what if anything Tunderbird can do for you in this fix go here : http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39
If it can be done at all these guys will know it.

Your plan to manually move the files is the right one.
You say Outlook couldn't find them?

Browse for the files and tell Outlook where to go.
Once they're in Outlook have Thunderbird import them and make Thunderbird your default client.

My search function can't seem to locate any .dbx files on either my C: drive or my old HD (G: drive). What is the e-mail file typically named?

What version of Outlook ( 2003, etc. ) do you have.
Are you confusing it with Outlook Express ?
I need to know which one you've got.

I believe I was using Outlook Express.

When you've done that on the old hard drive move the folder to the new hard drive and import it into Outlook Express.
From there you can import it into Thunderbird and set Thunderbird as your default mail client.
